Patients aren’t big fans of dental extractions. At Dental Partners of Brookline in Brookline, MA, it’s a feeling we understand. No one wants to lose one of their natural teeth.
There are many reasons to extract a tooth. The majority of the extractions we perform at Dental Partners of Brookline are wisdom tooth extractions. Wisdom teeth are accessory teeth, so their presence or absence makes no difference. Fortunately, if you have a wisdom tooth removed, you don’t need to worry about replacing it.
Tooth Extractions are often simple. Local anesthesia is injected into the affected area, and the tooth is pulled out. Simple tooth extractions usually take less than an hour. If a tooth is severely damaged, broken, or infected, it can usually be removed via simple extraction. Many wisdom teeth also come out the same way.
For a simple teeth extraction, the tooth has to be mostly over the surface of the gums and not stuck behind anything else. Unfortunately, some wisdom teeth are impacted. This can lead to pain and food getting stuck between your teeth. When this happens, we need to perform a surgical extraction. The type of anesthesia used in surgical extractions is more powerful, and recovery is a few days longer.
We’ll give you instructions after the extraction to make sure you’re comfortable and that your recovery is short and uncomplicated. You’ll be given mild painkillers that should keep you free from any discomfort while you recover.
You will be asked to bite on a piece of gauze to stop the bleeding. Smoking, using a straw, gargling, or any other activity that can disrupt clot formation should be avoided. The swelling will be more severe following surgical extractions. Patients can apply ice to the outside of the jaw over the skin to help control it.
You’ll be able to resume your life regularly within a few days. If you have any questions or concerns, let us know, and we’ll do our best to answer them.
