How A Woman's Smile Unleashed Her Potential

Screen Shot 2014-09-16 at 12.58.05 PM Meet Cynthia Y, mother of two and esteemed professor at a local college. She personifies confidence. Her leadership seminars captivate; her public speaking engagements inspire—suggesting a woman born with self-assurance.

But there was a time when Cynthia could not take center stage. Something essential to self-esteem instead caused pain: her smile. Decalcification had disintegrated her back teeth to the point that chewing food was a constant struggle. Severe staining plagued her front teeth—placing a healthy grin out of reach. She was a woman with natural ambition; chained by a poor self-image.

Then tragedy gave Cynthia a wake-up call. Her husband died suddenly and both of her parents passed, leaving her to care for her two children on her own. As life as she knew it faced upheaval, it became paramount that she examine her health and future. If she wanted to fulfill her potential, she had to be confident in her smile.

That is when she met Dr. Julie Elpers, a Harvard-trained prosthodontist now practicing at Dental Partners of Brookline. “It’s not like Cynthia had neglected to go to the dentist,” Says Dr. Elpers, “She had two implants and some fillings, but they were just duct tape on a sinking ship. Cynthia needed a comprehensive plan.”

The doctor’s steadfast demeanor impressed Cynthia. “We connected right off the bat. She never judged why I got to that point. She showed incredible forethought in determining how we should move forward.”

The dental reconstruction included six procedures and over twenty visits—each time Dr. Elpers worked as a true perfectionist who simply ‘wanted it done right.’ “She never shied away from her belief in her ability. It was truly a great experience.”

Six implants and 24 crowns later, the two of them looked over her before and after photographs. As Cynthia recounts, “I cried because it was so transformative.” That transformation is evident in the self-assured person she is today. She describes the feeling as “liberating” as she teaches management to 150 students at a time. “I never would have had the confidence to do that before. Now I keep saying yes to every opportunity that comes to me— and I always go in with a smile.”
