Wisdom teeth extraction is a fairly common procedure for us at the Dental Partners of Brookline. Having wisdom teeth removed doesn’t have to be a nightmare, however. In fact, with proper care after your procedure it can be much more comfortable than you had expected. With the right steps and oral hygiene, your surgical site will heal faster and your recovery will be shortened.
During Your Procedure
Most wisdom teeth removals are performed using some type of sedation. It is important to not have a heavy meal before your dental appointment to avoid nausea. You will need to have someone escort you to and from the office and stay with you at home for a few hours after the procedure. We will discuss home care techniques with this person to help remind you of them once your anesthesia wears off.
Once You Get Home
Be sure to only eat soft foods such as pudding, gelatin or ice cream the day or two following the procedure. Hard or grainy foods can irritate the surgical site if they become lodged in place, making it difficult to heal. Avoid drinking through a straw, carbonated beverages or smoking as these can interfere with clot formation and may result in a dry socket.
Oral hygiene is extremely important. At least two or three times a day you should gently rinse your mouth with warm salt water. This will help cleanse the extraction site and reduce inflammation. After a day or two you may begin brushing the rest of your teeth, but be very careful to not irritate the extraction site.
Take medication as directed. Your dentist may prescribe a pain reliever to be taken the first day or two, or you may be fine using an over the counter pain reliever. Please avoid aspirin containing products as these can make you bleed more easily. Stick to an anti-inflammatory medication such as ibuprofen.
Several Days After the Visit
As you become more comfortable, you may experiment with chewing foods toward the front of your mouth until the surgical site heals. Should you experience excessive swelling or pain that does not go away, seek professional dental care immediately.
